Industrial centrifugal fans are remarkably tolerant machines, but the failure modes that do happen are expensive: catastrophic bearing seizure, impeller crack propagation, motor burnout. Every one of these is preventable with a disciplined maintenance program. The schedule below is what we ship with every TTTIGER CF-series unit and what our service engineers recommend across third-party fans on retrofit jobs.
Monthly — 15 minutes per fan
- Visual inspection of belt tension and condition (V-belt drives only)
- Listen for any unusual bearing noise — clicks, squeals, growls
- Record bearing housing temperature with infrared thermometer (baseline + alarm at +20°C above baseline)
- Verify motor amp draw is within ±10% of nameplate at design conditions
- Check vibration with handheld meter — flag if RMS velocity exceeds 4.5 mm/s on rigid mounts
Quarterly — 60 minutes per fan
- Re-lubricate bearings per manufacturer interval (typically 3,000–5,000 hours for grease-lubricated SKF deep-groove)
- Inspect impeller for material build-up, pitting or visible cracks (penetrant dye for high-cycle units)
- Tighten foundation bolts to specified torque
- Inspect inlet guide vanes / dampers for free movement
- Clean cooling fins on motor housing
Annual — half-day shutdown
- Full vibration analysis (FFT spectrum) to detect early bearing or imbalance signatures
- Dynamic balance check on impeller — residual unbalance ≤ G6.3 per ISO 1940
- Wet-weight check of impeller for erosion-induced mass loss (compare to commissioning record)
- Megger test of motor windings (insulation resistance > 100 MΩ)
- Replace flexible coupling elements (rubber elements harden after 12–18 months)
- Verify safety guards, vibration isolators and seismic restraints
Bearing temperature is the single most predictive metric. A bearing that runs 20°C hotter than its 30-day baseline will fail within 60–120 days roughly 70% of the time, regardless of vibration trend.
5-Year overhaul triggers
At the 5-year mark — or earlier if any of the annual checks return a yellow flag — schedule a full overhaul: bearing replacement, motor winding insulation refresh, impeller re-balance and shaft straightness verification. Overhaul cost is typically 18–25% of new-fan cost and restores 90–95% of original life expectancy.
